Mendoza, who was hired by the Mets before the 2024 season, led the team to the National League Championship Series in his first year. However, the team’s performance has declined since then, despite significant investments, including a record $765 million contract for outfielder Juan Soto. Injuries to key players such as Francisco Lindor and Soto have compounded the Mets’ struggles this season.
The Mets, who opened the season with the highest payroll in Major League Baseball, have not met expectations, prompting the change in leadership.
Mendoza’s tenure ends with a 206-199 record, and his departure marks the third managerial change in MLB this season, following similar moves by the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.
